MORE ABOUT OVIE

Ovie Muntean was born in Transylvania, Romania in a time when socialist communists were in power. Today, the Romanian dictatorship of Nicolae and Elena Ceausescu is known to have been the 2nd most brutal regime ever to rule.

At an early age Ovie learned that freedom wasn’t free as he watched his father, John Muntean, put his life on the line to free his family from Romania and its tyrannical rulers.  An unwavering courage that proved one man can make a difference in a country of 23 million people if he is willing to pay the ultimate price.

Fifteen-year-old Ovie witnessed his father begin a hunger strike one day before the opening of the International World Conference on Security and Cooperation in Madrid, Spain.  The same conference where Eastern Block Communist countries were seeking “Favored Nation” status and the opportunity to engage in trade with the free world.  John had carefully chosen the time of the hunger strike to leverage the conference and force the tyrannical communist government of Nicolae and Elena Ceausescu to let his family flee to United States of America. John knew that Romania’s path to “Favored Nation” status required, among other criteria, free emigration of its citizens out of the country.

The Romanian officials being strongly questioned during the conference about a man named John Muntean going on a hunger strike to get his family to freedom brought great shame to the government of Romania.

What John did was equal to the shot heard round the world in 1776. Because in essence it was. In 1981 Ovie’s father, John Muntean, was responsible for over 50 family members safely leaving Romania and finding their way to America, the land of the free. Thousands of Romanians followed suit, fleeing this socialist communist regime.  Tens of thousands of Romanians had died seeking freedom from the communist takeover in 1945.
